How to Get Ahead Before Grade 12: Three Key Milestones for Success
Waiting until the last minute is a mistake—especially in Grade 12, when students juggle coursework, extracurriculars, and crafting compelling college applications.
Many students scramble to meet deadlines, but you don’t have to be one of them. By strategically planning and hitting key milestones before the end of Grade 11, you can make your senior year significantly more manageable and set yourself up for success.
Here are three essential milestones to achieve before Grade 12 begins.
Milestone 1: Competitive Academics

Your academics are the foundation of your college application. They reflect your intellectual curiosity, work ethic, and readiness for rigorous coursework in your chosen field. By the end of Grade 11, aim to have:
- 6-10 AP courses completed or in progress. Class difficulty showcases your academic rigor
- If you take IB, predicted grades within your aspired range (ideally 38+).
- SAT/ACT testing completed
We don’t recommend taking standardized tests in your final year. The more academic work you complete early, the more mental space you’ll have to focus on what truly sets you apart: your personal story and Impact Project.
Milestone 2: Direction & Preliminary College Lists

By the end of Grade 11, you should have a clear sense of your academic and career interests. This means having:
A clear subject focus or intended major. Your extracurricular commitments should already be aligned with your academic direction.
A list of thoughtful "whys" for each college: Your reasons for applying should go beyond generic statements like, “I’ve always loved astrophysics.” Instead, ground your motivations in personal anecdotes or experiences that reveal your unique perspective and story. Make a list of these — these will form the foundation of your essay stories.
A shortlist of teacher recommendations: Your chosen teachers are a) the people who know you best at school and b) teach subjects that align with your intended focus. Reach out to your teachers early so they can give your letter the proper attention needed to accurately represent your personality.
Milestone 3: A Completed Impact Project

Your Impact Project is one of the most crucial aspects of your profile—it demonstrates your initiative, leadership, and passion for making a difference.
What makes you stand-out is the depth of your Impact Project and how you tell its story. Before the end of G11, you should have completed most of your initiatives so you can spend all of G12 refining your story.
An ideal Impact Project has:
Established team: A functioning executive team and active members working collaboratively.
Consistent activities: Your project should have been running successfully for at least six months.
Community partnerships: To demonstrate scaled impact, it is best if you have already worked with an established organization or authority. It could be a local business, similar institution, or organization. This demonstrates credibility.
Media recognition: A news or social media feature from a large outlet particularly highlights your project’s scale and impact.
Strategic planning before Grade 12 will make your senior year more manageable and allow you to focus on what truly matters—crafting a compelling story that highlights your unique strengths and impact.
Get ahead now, and set yourself up for success.
